A maintenance head in an Ambad unit opens twenty resumes on a Friday evening, usually on a phone, usually between two other things. He is not reading. He is scanning. If your resume does not answer his questions in the first ten seconds, it goes to the bottom of the pile and the interview call goes to somebody else.
Our recruiters sit on the other side of that pile every week. What follows is what we send candidates who ask us why they are not getting calls, written for plant roles: maintenance, production, quality, tool room, utilities, safety and the diploma and degree engineers who support them.
1. What the first read is looking for
In a plant role the first read is a search for four answers, in this order: which machines or systems you have actually worked on, what shift pattern you are used to, how far you live from the gate, and when you can join. Everything else can wait for the interview.
That is why a resume that opens with a paragraph about a "hard working professional seeking a challenging role in a reputed organisation" has already lost. It uses the most valuable space on the page to say nothing. Those four answers belong in the top third, because on a phone screen that is all anyone sees before scrolling.
2. Six blocks, one page
A plant engineering resume needs six blocks and nothing more. Up to about eight years of experience, keep it to a single page. Beyond that, two pages are fine. Three pages are never fine.
The header line
Name, the role you are applying for, your area and city, a mobile number that reaches you, an email, and your notice period. Something like: Sagar P. | Maintenance Engineer, CNC and VMC | Indira Nagar, Nashik | 30 days notice | WhatsApp on the same number. Keep the email plain, first name and surname at any common provider. A photograph, full postal address, father's name, marital status and date of birth are not needed on an Indian engineering resume and they eat the space you actually need.
A three line summary, rewritten for each role
Not an objective. Three lines that answer how many years, on what equipment, and in what kind of plant. For example: four years of preventive and breakdown maintenance on CNC turning centres and hydraulic presses in a 300 person auto component unit in Satpur, trained on TPM and 5S, comfortable on rotating shifts. A reader now knows whether to keep going, which is the whole job of a summary.
Experience, written as equipment, action and number
Every bullet should carry a machine or a system, what you did to it, and a number. "Reduced changeover time on the VMC line from 55 minutes to 38 by preparing a tool pre setting trolley" is a different candidate from "Responsible for machine maintenance". If you have no measured saving, use scale or frequency instead: daily preventive maintenance on 14 machines across two shifts, or 60 to 70 inspection reports a month.
Two resumes reach the client. Both say maintenance engineer. One says which machine, how many of them, and what changed. That one gets the call.

Split the block into equipment, software and systems, and standards and practices. Write the makes and series you have genuinely used rather than a general word, because both recruiters and tracking systems search for the exact term. If you have worked on a PLC, name it. If you know AutoCAD, say which drawings you produced with it. Skip the percentage bars next to each skill. Nobody believes 85 percent SolidWorks, and it prints badly.
Education, certificates and safety training
Diploma or degree, institute, year, and marks. Then the certificates that carry weight on a shop floor: your ITI trade, an electrical supervisor licence, forklift or crane operation, first aid, fire safety, and internal auditor training for ISO 9001 or IATF 16949 if you have it. When two profiles look alike, a current safety certificate often decides the shortlist, so do not bury it on page two.
Projects, or one improvement you drove
For a fresher this block does the work your experience block cannot. Take one or two projects and give each three lines: the problem, what you built or measured, and the tools you used. A final year project on vibration analysis described concretely is worth more than a list of eleven subjects you studied.
3. Clearing the first filter
Most plants in the belt now keep applications in a tracking system, and our own recruiters work in one too. A filter is not clever. It matches words. So read the posting twice and use the employer's vocabulary wherever it is honestly true of you. If the advertisement says breakdown maintenance, write breakdown maintenance, not "trouble shooting of equipment" in the hope that someone translates it for you.
Format matters for the same reason. Send a PDF unless the posting asks for Word. Keep one column. Tables, text boxes, page headers and footers and decorative graphics often come out scrambled when a system parses them, and what reaches the recruiter is a jumble. Name the file with your own name and the role: Sagar-Patil-Maintenance-Engineer-Nashik.pdf. A file called "resume final 2 updated.pdf" is the one opened last.

4. Five mistakes we see every week
These five come up so often that fixing them is usually worth more than rewriting the whole document.
- One resume for every role. A quality engineer posting and a maintenance posting need different top thirds. Change the header line and the summary each time. It takes four minutes.
- Gaps left unexplained. A break for a family situation, a course, a plant closure or a health reason is normal, and a single honest line closes the question before it is asked. Silence invites a worse guess.
- Expected salary printed on the resume. It fixes your ceiling before anyone has met you. Leave it out, and answer it on the call.
- No notice period anywhere. When a client needs somebody in three weeks, a resume without a joining date is set aside for one that has it.
- A number that does not ring. If your phone is off during your shift, say so and give the hours you can take a call, or add a second number. We do try twice, but not four times.
5. The check to run before you press apply
Two minutes, every time.
- One page, one column, PDF, under 1 MB. Open it on your own phone before sending it to anyone.
- Name, role, area, mobile and notice period sit in the first three lines.
- Every experience bullet names equipment or a system and carries a number, a scale or a frequency.
- Safety and certificate lines are visible without scrolling past the first screen.
- The words in the posting appear in your resume wherever they are true of you.
- The file is named after you and the role, and your email inbox is not full.
- One other person has read it for spelling and for the two words you always get wrong.
